“South African Government Wants Whites to Leave SA” – Saffa changes his name to Ivan, wants to move to Russia too

At least a million, possibly much more, white South Africans have left their country in the past three decades, but most don’t choose Russia as their new home, unlike Johannes du Toit, who is intent on settling there as Ivan Vahrushin.

“The hostility, the injustice I’m living through, it is to do with the South African government. It is an attack on our people. They don’t want us to feel comfortable in our own country. They want us all to leave,”du Toit explains in his still somewhat rough but comprehensible Russian.

Ironically, it is du Toit’s inability to leave South Africa for good, as Europe does not accept their right of return, that led a Russian crew from Russia Today to contact h

South African diver plays his part in saving trapped boys at the Thai cave rescue

Some heroes wear oxygen tanks, rather than capes. The world watched in hope rather than in expectation this week, as 12 boys and their soccer coach fought for their lives during the Thai cave rescue.

As Good Things Guy reports, there was a South African influence on the mission.

Scenes of joy erupted when the twelfth and final boy was extracted from the cave and taken to safety. After 17 days trapped in a cold, dark hole, they had defied the odds and escaped to freedom.

Who is Leandro Gerardo?
One of the brave divers who helped these kids navigate their way through treacherous waters was Leandro Nicolas Gerardo. He was born in Argentina, but grew up in South Africa and attended Pinetown High School in KZN as a boy.

He offered his services to the rescue teams in Chiang Rai, and took time off work to fly from his home in Bangkok and volunteer with fellow divers.

Nie omdat hy Maandag sterker of vinniger of meer kreatief as sy teenstander, Gael Monfils, was nie. Omdat hy sielkundig beter was.

Blitzbok Werner Kok says no to WP for Currie Cup

Cape Town – Springbok Sevens star Werner Kok says he will not be available for Western Province during this year’s Currie Cup.

Kok was a star performance on the wing for WP during their victorious 2017 campaign but he has revealed that he will not play in this year’s edition.

The 25-year-old told Netwerk24 that he wants to rest and instead focus on sevens.

“My plans have been made. I don’t think I’m going to play Currie Cup. I want to stay at the sevens team and I’m aiming for the Olympic Games in 2020.”

The best in the world, again, Van Ryn’s Brandy

The House of Van Ryn’s is celebrating its second consecutive year of victory after yet again taking home the Worldwide Brandy Trophy at the International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC) in London.

The Van Ryn’s 12-Year-Old Distiller’s Reserve – produced at the Stellenbosch-based distillery – was selected as the finest potstill brandy at the 47th annual edition of the IWSC; one of the most respected wine and spirit competitions in the world which, incidentally, sets the international benchmark for quality.

Nearly 90 countries entered their samples this year and each sample is judged according to its class.

Judges raved over the Van Ryn’s 12-Year-Old saying it had a “stand out nose packed with ripe and dried fruit where apricot, pear and mango are most expressive.” The palate was described as being fruity and well backed by lots of floral notes, and the finish as being “long-lasting, character-filed.”

It’s still all about the US

The local unit scored somewhat of a consolation goal on Friday (sorry Argentina fans), as global equities and EM markets ended the week stronger.

Eyes are still on the US though as June Fed minutes and job numbers will be out later this week. The data, coupled with escalating trade tensions between the US and China, could provide more volatility than the Spain vs. Russia penalty shootout.

On local shores, consumers are set to be hit with another sucker punch as the price of petrol is set to increase by 26c/litre. Combine this with higher municipal rates, taxes and electricity tariffs and you’ve got yourself an already overworked wallet. Have a great week and batten down the hatches if you’re in the Cape!

David Goldblatt – Remembering the legacy of a photographer

David Goldblatt’s legacy will continue to live on through his powerful black and white images made in South Africa, documenting the country’s tumultuous inner workings across racial and cultural boundaries.

Goldblatt’s career spanned an impressive 70 years, dedicated to telling the stories of South Africans through his lens. Today we mourn the loss of one of the countries greats, reported first by Mail & Guardian.

To a large extent, a documentary photographer’s life is moulded in the public domain, directed by social injustices, inspired to create awareness. This was the life of David Goldblatt, who began photographing in 1948, documenting a fractured and segregated Apartheid state.

Born in Randfontein to parents who were Lithuanian refugees, it seems Goldblatt’s life was destined to revolve around ideas of belonging and the social constructs which marginalise communities. Through his kee
