Super Rugby News: Five talking points on the past weekend’s action

A botched call, a hot wing and the rampant Jaguares feature in our talking points after week 12 of the Super Rugby season.

Beale clanger costs Waratahs
Kurtley Beale’s baffling decision to cross-kick to Israel Folau in the final minute of the Waratahs’ 24-21 loss to the Blues was down to mistakenly believing his team had a penalty advantage.

The Tahs were laying siege to the Blues try-line for most of the second half and had put themselves into a position to win the match.

After 19 phases in the dying minutes Beale kicked just too high for Folau in the right corner when keeping ball in hand was the better option. The ball went out and with it the Waratahs’ remaining hopes.

“I thought that was a penalty advantage because I sa

Super Rugby News: Five key talking points the weekend’s action

A former All Black’s motivating influence, a missing penalty try and an injury curse are among five talking points from the weekend’s Super Rugby action.

Reds’ Thorn in side of Lions
Former All Blacks lock Brad Thorn is making his mark on the Reds, highlighted by their gritty 27-22 win over South Africa’s table topping Golden Lions in Brisbane on Saturday.

The victory means the Reds have already won four games – the same number as in their entire abject 2017 season – with two games still to come against the winless Sunwolves.

Thorn, who boldly dropped former Wallaby fly-half Quade Cooper from his 2018 squad, has encouraged the development of young pivot Hamish Stewart, who looms as the Reds’ first-choice playmaker next ye

Rugby News: Bryan Habana calls time on career

Springbok legend, Bryan Habana has announced that the current season will be his last in professional rugby.

The 34-year old has been plying his trade at French Top 14 outfit, Toulon and has spent much of the current campaign in the sidelines as he has been plagued with injuries, which have seen him not taking part in any competitive action since the start of 2018.

He made the announcement on Tuesday, as he took to social media, saying he would have preferred a better end to his career.

“I, like most, would have liked my career to have ended differently, but sometimes things don’t turn out quite the way we hope for,” he wrote.

“So at the end of this season, it’s time to say goodbye and thank you to the game I so dearly love.”

Vancouver Sevens: Blitzboks drawn with NZ, Russia and Scotland

The Blitzboks remain top of the World Series Sevens table, despite a few slip-ups in recent tournaments.

They can’t afford any more stumbles, though, especially not in Vancouver, where they are drawn in a pool with their closest rivals – New Zealand.

The Blitzboks are definitely missing Seabelo Senatla since he departed for Super Rugby. They slipped up against Argentina in the semifinals of the past weekend’s Las Vegas Sevens, where the USA claimed the title.

The South African Sevens side then lost 26-22 to Fiji in the bronze final, finishing fourth overall.
