Blitzbok Werner Kok says no to WP for Currie Cup

Cape Town – Springbok Sevens star Werner Kok says he will not be available for Western Province during this year’s Currie Cup.

Kok was a star performance on the wing for WP during their victorious 2017 campaign but he has revealed that he will not play in this year’s edition.

The 25-year-old told Netwerk24 that he wants to rest and instead focus on sevens.

“My plans have been made. I don’t think I’m going to play Currie Cup. I want to stay at the sevens team and I’m aiming for the Olympic Games in 2020.”

Kok struggled with injuries during the Blitzboks’ 2017/18 World Rugby Sevens campaign but returned to help the team defend their series title when they won the Paris Sevens last month.

Rugby News: Kriel reunited with Ackermann at Gloucester

South African international Jaco Kriel, who captained the Lions to successive Super Rugby finals, will be reunited with former coach Johan Ackermann after signing for English Premiership side Gloucester on Monday.

The 28-year-old flanker – capped 11 times since making his debut against Ireland in 2016 – has not played since injuring his shoulder against Australia last September.

Kriel will be unavailable for several months after undergoing a second operation on the shoulder in March.

Despite this Gloucester’s director of rugby David Humphreys said he had been given assurances Kriel would be fit.
