The Australian cricket team are caught in the eye of a storm at the moment, following a ball tampering scandal that’s dragged their name through the mud.
Both Cameron Bancroft and Steve Smith fronted up to the media yesterday, as the former was caught rubbing yellow tape on the ball. They’ve certainly had their trial by media, but they aren’t the first players to get caught red (or, yellow) handed.
What is ball tampering?
It is when a team who’s bowling try to alter the shape or condition of a cricket ball to gain an unfair advantage. To make the ball swing, one side has to be kept rough, whilst another remains smooth. You’re allowed to “smoothen” a ball with sweat or saliva, as well as shining it up with clothing or a towel.
